THE PATH TO THE TOP: THE STORY OF MASTER OF SPORT ALAU MAULETKAN
In 2021, Alua was first introduced to sports tourism at her school’s sports club. She immediately enjoyed climbing ropes and overcoming obstacles — and eagerly waited for summer to try her hand at water tourism.
When summer came, she attended her first training session, got into a boat — and instantly felt that this was her element. Although things didn’t always go smoothly at first, her coaches supported and encouraged her, which gave her confidence. That year, in 2021, she first picked up a paddle. After the summer season, Alua decided to take sports tourism seriously.
By the summer of 2022, she was already training purposefully in the water discipline. Her coaches then suggested she take part in the Republic of Kazakhstan Championships. It was her first major competition, and she won an honorable fourth place. There, for the first time on rapid waters with a strong current, she felt true excitement — thrilling, breathtaking, and unforgettable.
In 2023, Alua again took part in the Republic Championships and won second place in the under-14 category. It was then that a real spark appeared in her eyes — the desire to pursue canoe slalom not just as a hobby, but seriously. If earlier training was simply part of school life, it now became a matter of passion — water tourism revealed itself to her as an exciting, extreme, and adventurous world.
Each training session brings new knowledge and skills. Alua learns to paddle with proper technique, perform complex maneuvers, and maintain balance. At first, she was afraid — to gain speed, to steer the boat, to risk capsizing. But over time, her fears faded away, replaced by confidence and determination. Of course, challenges remain, but now she knows for sure: if you don’t try, you won’t achieve anything.
Her greatest reward has not only been the medals, but also the support of her loved ones — her coaches, parents, grandmother, and friends. Their warm words inspire her and give her strength to keep moving forward.
Today, Alua’s main goal is to win the Asian Junior Championships next year. She dreams about it and firmly believes: she can do it.
